Heard at the UIAA meeting in Kathmandu that Nepal asked for 6 more peaks above 8,000 m to be counted separately. That would make 14 eight-thousanders in Nepal instead of 8! Which peaks?

Tourism Minister Khadak Raj Paudel and NMA President Fur Gelje Sherpa presented the proposal at the 2026 UIAA (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation) general assembly in Kathmandu. The six peaks:

Kanchenjunga massif: - Yalung Khang 8,505 m - Kanchenjunga South 8,476 m - Kanchenjunga Central 8,473 m - Yalung Khang West 8,077 m

Everest-Lhotse area: - Lhotse Middle 8,410 m - Lhotse Shar 8,400 m

Nepal's Department of Tourism already lists 14 peaks above 8,000 m after its 2025 revision, but internationally only 8 are recognised. The argument is that each peak has its own name, geography and separate route to the summit. No date has been given yet for a UIAA decision.

Taplejung lai ta ramro khabar! Four of the six are in the Kanchenjunga massif. More recognised 8,000ers could bring more expeditions to our side.

Nice detail: this is only the third UIAA assembly held in Nepal, after 1982 and 2011. About 60 delegates came from countries like the UK, US, Japan, France and Switzerland.
