The UN General Assembly (81st session) unanimously adopted Resolution 81/L.8, moving the graduation date for Nepal and Bangladesh from 24 November 2026 to 24 November 2029. Both countries asked for it together; Nepal sent its formal request on 13 May 2026.

Reasons given: changing economic and political conditions, geopolitical tension, supply-chain problems and risks to remittances. Government studies warned that productive-sector jobs could fall by up to 35% without proper transition measures.

What graduation means: Nepal loses the special support measures for LDCs, most importantly duty-free and quota-free access for its exports. The extra 3 years are meant to build productive capacity and carry out the Smooth Transition Strategy (adopted February 2024).

Background: Nepal has been an LDC since 1971.

So it is breathing space, not a cancellation. Graduation still happens in 2029, the question is whether exporters are ready by then.
