Why proposed Nijgadh International Airport is full of controversies?

The government started the discussion to construct the Nijgadh International Airport some twenty six years ago as an alternative to Nepal’s only international airport in Kathmandu. The Nijgadh international airport is expected to be the largest in South Asia in terms of area that covers 8,045.79 hectares. However, the proposed international airport triggered controversies after Environmental Impact Assessment of the project showed that some 2.4 million trees need to cut down for the project. Well, it’s not just about tree only but also about wildlife habitat. Further, proposed international airport lies in the proximity of Parsa National Park which protects endangered animals. Environmentalists and conservationists argue that the construction of international airport in the middle of vast forest will have irreparable impact on biodiversity and ecology.
